2023 grants announced, totalling more than $3.8 million

The Children’s Foundation is pleased to announce it has awarded 89 grants in 2023.

Combined, these awards total more than $3.8 million to support projects in the Community Benefit, Research, and Education pillars. Since 2011, The Foundation has granted $80 million to partners in our community.

The Children’s Foundation remains dedicated to the health and well-being of children and their families by working collaboratively with other organizations in the community.

On January 1, The Children’s Foundation welcomed a new President & CEO, Andrew Stein. As The Foundation enters this exciting new chapter, it is likely dates of grant rounds may adjust based on evaluation of short- and long-term strategies which will help create meaningful change. Pediatric Research:

Central Michigan University and Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support the infrastructure costs of the Clinical Research Institute

Wayne State University to support a study of the effects of Propoxur and PFAS on neurodevelopment and leukemic progression

Wayne State University to support the research infrastructure costs of the Surgical Services division at Children’s Hospital of Michigan

Regents of the University of Michigan to support salaries for research positions at the University of Michigan investigating equity in child health

University Pediatricians to support the salary and benefits for a Clinical Research Associate in the Hematology-Oncology division at Children’s Hospital of Michigan

Wayne State University to support the continuation of a study on retinoblastoma using the zebrafish model

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support families experiencing financial hardship related to the medical care or special needs of a child

Hamtramck Public Schools to support the continued operation of a health clinic for children serving new, legal immigrants in Hamtramck

Kids Kicking Cancer to support the expansion of programming to address the pediatric care needs of children in Detroit and Michigan

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support the salary and benefits for the Art Therapist who provides therapeutic services to patients that enhance their treatment and recovery

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support an annual event for survivors of pediatric cancer and their families

The Guidance Center to support medical examinations for children who are suspected victims of abuse

Michigan State University Detroit Music School to support two part-time music therapists to provide therapeutic services to Children’s Hospital of Michigan patients

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support a program providing education on injury prevention and provide various safety supplies to families in need

Kids Health Connections to provide several sessions of a nutrition and fitness program for young people struggling with obesity

Wayne State University to support a collegiate recovery and sobriety program together with the Jamie Daniels Foundation

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support the salary and benefits of a schoolteacher to help patients keep up with their studies while in the hospital

Connect Detroit to support a program enhancing the medical treatment of children at Children’s Hospital of Michigan via exposure to the arts

Kids Kicking Cancer to support a pain management and stress relief program using the martial arts for patients at Children’s Hospital of Michigan

Life Remodeled to support programming to bring youth and their families to access services at the Durfee Innovation Society

Buildup STEAM to help support a Lego robotics program for Children’s Hospital of Michigan patients that teaches STEAM skills as well as helping to normalize their hospital stay

Michigan League for Public Policy to help support a data analyst for the publication of the Kids Count Data book which contains invaluable statistics about the state of child health in Michigan

Winning Futures to support a program that provides mentoring and scholarships to underserved Detroit area students

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to help provide salary for a family-support position in the NICU

Olivet College to support a collegiate recovery and sobriety program together with the Jamie Daniels Foundation

MCREST to help support salary for a children’s program coordinator, as well as childcare services for families

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support a part-time salary for a yoga therapist to enhance the treatment and recovery of patients

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to provide 1-2 sets of custom pressure garments to burn patients to minimize scarring

Oakland County Sheriff PAL to support a program providing fitness activities for preschool children in Pontiac

Ele’s Place to support the expansion of a virtual grief support program with the goal of reaching students in remote areas of Michigan who do not have access to in-person programming

Hand2Hand to provide weekend and school break backpacks of food to food-insecure students in west Michigan

DLIVE to help support salary for a therapist in a program to assist youth affected by violence

Detroit YMCA to provide swim lessons and water safety instructions to Detroit children

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support the part-time salary for a coordinator to assist patients with technology

Blessings in a Backpack to provide weekend and school break backpacks of food to food-insecure students in southeast Michigan

Food Bank of Eastern Michigan to provide fresh, nutritious food and personal products at no charge to food-insecure children

Forgotten Harvest to provide fresh, nutritious food to families with small children via Forgotten Harvest’s mobile food pantry

Gleaners to provide fresh milk and produce to food-insecure families with children through Gleaners pantry sites

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support the purchase of distraction items and tools for use by the Child Life staff as well as toys for the hospital playrooms

Birth Detroit to support the purchase of an ultrasound machine, as well as childbirth education literature, to help improve birth statistics in Detroit

University Pediatricians to provide a memorable party for patients of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan palliative care unit and their families

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support the Snowpile holiday gift program as well as other special events for patients

The Farm at St. Joe’s to support community food shares for food-insecure families with children in Pontiac

New Hope Center for Grief Support to support programming to help youth and families learn to cope with grief

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support a part-time coordinator salary and purchase of books for the Reach Out and Read program

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support the purchase of bandages and ointments to be given to burn patients whose insurance does not cover these items

Wayne State University to provide free therapy sessions for children with communication disorders whose insurance does not or has ceased to cover these services

The Rainbow Connection to support families experiencing financial hardship related to the medical care or special needs of a child

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to provide ice cream and popsicle treats for patients and their families and purchase a new ice cream cart

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to provide specialized car seats for patients who are unable to use a standard car seat due to their injury or treatment

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to provide clothing to patients and their families whose clothing has been damaged or destroyed or to have a fresh change of clothes when staying at the hospital for an extended time

Wayne Health to provide eco-friendly menstrual supplies to be given to adolescent girls at Wayne Health

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support the purchase of trauma safety giveaway items at community events and a picnic for burn survivors

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to provide patient distraction items for use by the Child Life staff

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to send a representative family to Washington DC for the CHA Advocacy Day events

Oakland University to supplement a collegiate recovery program at Oakland University

University Pediatricians to support a memorial service at Children’s Hospital of Michigan for patients and staff who have passed away, and provides cards and legacy building items to families

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to support social events for cardiology patients and their families

Building Beds 4 Kids to support the construction of bed frames and purchase of mattresses for children in foster care who need a bed

American Diabetes Association to provide transportation to Camp Midicha for children in need, along with medical and camp supplies

Children’s Hospital of Michigan to purchase prizes for the bingo program for patients

Ten-16 Recovery Network to supplement a collegiate recovery program at Central Michigan University, Ferris State University, and Mid-Michigan College
