Physical Health

Physical Health

Our support of children’s physical health focuses on innovative solutions and best practices that help ensure all kids have access to high-quality care – and we do this through prevention, education, and research efforts.

We support programs in schools, clinics, and community settings that provide essential services like dental, vision, and hearing screenings, which help more kids access the care they need to thrive. We also work with trusted experts to make sure that parents and caregivers have access to the latest information and best practices to keep their children safe and healthy. We invest in training and workforce development to ensure healthcare providers and caregivers are equipped with the tools and knowledge to meet growing health challenges. And through targeted research, we’re advancing strategies that lead to better treatment and outcomes for children and adolescents across the state.

THE PROBLEM

74%

Diabetes and asthma are the leading chronic diseases among children ages 0-18. Detroit had a 74% higher prevalence of asthma among children compared to Michigan as a whole.

LESS THAN
HALF

In Southeast Michigan, under 50% of children and youth from 0-18 years old visit their dentist once a year.

#1

Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of hospitalization and death for children and youth aged 0-24 years old.

Community Inspired Solutions

Every day, we work to improve health outcomes and expand opportunities for children and young people across Michigan. Because without health, kids face barriers that can limit their potential. Our efforts help ensure more children and families have the chance to lead healthier lives today and build stronger futures tomorrow.

Family Nurse Practitioner

Black Family Development, Inc. (BFDI) is making healthcare more accessible for Detroit families through a “medical home” model that combines behavioral and physical health services in a safe, welcoming space. With support from the Children’s Foundation, BFDI now offers on-site physical care at its Hope and Healing Clinic, thanks to a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Vision Screenings Help Improve
Health for Kids

Access to basic healthcare, including eye care, is vital to a child’s well-being and future. Glasses not only improve vision but also boost mental health by reducing anxiety and increasing self-esteem. Through a partnership between the Children’s Foundation and the Jewish Fund, the Hamtramck SEES program provides essential eye care to students in the Hamtramck Public School District, an immigrant community facing significant economic and social barriers.
