Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation to Host Inaugural  Child & Adolescent Behavioral Health Summit

Advocates, service providers and health professionals to come together
to support the well-being of Michigan’s children

DETROIT – May 9, 2019 – To support a better future for Michigan’s families, the state’s leading advocate for children and young adults is hosting the first ever Child & Adolescent Behavioral Health Summit: Investing in the mental wellness of our youth. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation (CHMF) will bring together advocates, service providers and health professionals on May 14, 2019 to discuss how to improve the health of children in Michigan.

The all-day conference exhibits CHMF’s expanded commitment to serving all children in need.

“When you see a statistic that one in five children suffer from a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or developmental health disorder, yet only 20 percent of children receive the treatment they need, it’s clear that we need to do more for our kids,” said Lawrence J. Burns, President & CEO, Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. “We all need to invest in the mental wellness of our youth. By having these conversations and working together, we can secure a better future for our children.”

The 2019 Child & Adolescent Behavioral Health Summit: Investing in the mental wellness of our youth conference will bring together community leaders, service providers, and families to listen, learn, and network with advocates on how to prioritize behavioral healthcare for children and young adults. It takes place at The Inn at St. Johns in Plymouth, Michigan.

Keynote presenters include foster care advocate and author Shenandoah Chefalo, magician and attempted suicide survivor Anthony Grupido, and leading mental health speaker and author Mike Veny. More than a dozen additional speakers and health professionals from across the state will be on-site, including Ken Daniels of the Jamie Daniels Foundation and Tricia L. Schuster of CARE House of Oakland County. Topics include trauma and resilience, substance abuse and the opioid crisis, suicide awareness, how to best deal with anxiety and depression, and the impact of the social determinants of health on mental wellness.

In 2018, the CHMF provided $6.2 million in funding to support and serve children in Michigan – injury prevention, mental health, abuse and neglect, oncology and cardiology research, and wellness and nutrition. The conference is an extension of its focus on the health and well-being of Michigan youth, especially mental health and wellness this year.
